monday morning memories

Yesterday at church we talked a lot about family history and how it's so much more than just looking at ancient film strips and stuff. Our bishop (being a man of some age, lots of experience, and tons of grand kids) advised us that a great way to do family history is to keep track of the little moments that we have with our families. He said, almost regretfully, that those memories fade and you easily forget how you felt in those moments. Well folks, I haven't blogged in over a month and in those weeks a lot of great memories have been made.

Today I'm just going to write about our Monday morning... because for a Monday morning it was pretty spectacular in the smallest of ways.

I don't want this post to be one of those "my kid is so awesome and never does a thing wrong" posts... ya know the ones that sugar coat peoples' lives and make them look as though they're using social media as a mask to hide what's really going on in their lives. Because it's not that post. Because this morning really was one of a kind. Not all mornings are by any means.

This is what happened in a nutshell- Peter was, and has, been the extra biggest helper and best listener.

I'd love if this was a phase... 'cause it'd make our Monday morning go so smoothly!

It all started when I got back from biking and started sorting laundry. All I had to do was ask Peter to go get his dirty clothes basket. And he did! Then he helped me sort all of the clothes! What a gem!

Then we said bye to daddy and I got cleaned up for the day. We all know how nerve wracking it can be to shower with a toddler on the loose. I came out to find a lego/matchbox car mine field in our living room. It only took stepping on one for me to be done with stepping on them for the day haha. I asked Peter to put them away since he wasn't playing with them. And he did! I looked up from my breakfast three minutes later and the floor was as clean as it ever has been! Really, such a gem.

Once the laundry got going... thanks to my gem of a husband who had then returned from his trip to the temple and watched the kiddos so I could take the laundry to the laundry building child-free... we made our way to the grocery store where Peter talked me through everything we put in the basket. Fortunately we agreed on all of our purchases and were equally disappointed when Lolo's didn't have little teeth-flossers. He even put all of the groceries onto the belt as we checked out and kept an on-the-verge-grumpy-and-sleeping baby (the one we babysit) happy all the way home. Super gem!

Next came moving the laundry to the dryers. It's almost like he's watched me do it a million times because he just went and got one of the carts, opened the washer, and started filling it up with wet clothes to wheel over to the dryer! For reals at this point I was thinking he has got to be up to something... that or I'm going to be getting a hefty bill at the end of the day.

And that was only the first half of our day! Incident free! Well... Peter did get the momma stink-eye when it was nap time and he couldn't remember where he had hid the babe's binky. But he found it shortly after waking up and the babe took a long nap anyway so all was forgiven. (:

Anyhow... kind of random side note. This last weekend Todd and I were talking about frugal living and the kinds of things that we'll need to do during his PhD program to make ends meet. Fortunately we're not doing too bad right now so hopefully no drastic financial changes will have to be made. That conversation lead to a very-far-in-the-future conversation about the things that we wouldn't mind having in our future home once we do have an income in 5ish years. Things like how many floors does a modest home have? how many rooms are too many rooms? Todd was asking me what kind of rooms in the house I thought were unnecessary. Like a front dining room that we only eat in once a week. To that I responded, "No, not unnecessary." Hey, I like hosting... so a nice place to have people over away from the mess in the kitchen would be really nice! (: However... a house that I can't keep up with? that I can't clean or maintain myself? To me that would be unnecessary and uncomfortable. To each room that I said wasn't unnecessary (there weren't many I promise haha) Todd reminded me that that would mean there will be more to clean... to which I reminded him that that's what the kids' chores on Saturday morning are for.

This morning Peter's absolute-gem-ness gave me hope that I won't be alone on Saturday mornings. Yeah kids don't like doing chores. And I'm sure pretty soon here he'll be a pain about it. Heck, most days he has a hard time picking up toys. But at least there's hope. He's going to regret showing his cards this morning haha.

Anyway... I'm one lucky momma. I was so heartbroken all of those months and months of not getting pregnant again but I've seen so many blessings come from that trial. One huge one being that I've had tons of one-on-one time with my Mr. Peter. He has been the perfect little buddy to spend my days with.

I've truly been blessed with a child that is so loving and has this innate desire to do good things. People constantly ask me "how I do it"... like at the park when he's getting a little too far and I ask him to come back... and he just does. Honestly, I'm not the one "doing it." It's all him, he's really is just a great kid that likes being obedient and being a helper.

Here's to hoping our next little man follows his brother's example!
